Has anyone ever used the Murad system for acne? Does it work?

I did not have an acne problem until I was 21. All through my teenage years I would have a pimple every now and then but it wasn’t a regular thing. In the summer of 2004 I began breaking out on the sides of my face and it soon moved to my chin and all over. I had very bad acne, where clear skin once was, and it happened so fast! I had all kinds of pimples, cystic, white heads, blackheads. I went to a dermotogist and he had me on doxycycline which caused me to have ulcers and didn’t do anything for my acne. I stopped taking that and got on birth control. That helped, but I can’t be on it now because of insurance. I used Clinique and that helped some, but I still always had a few pimples. I recently tried proactive for 3 months and it cleared me up some, I still have pimples and now my skin is severly dry and I have develped dermatitis around my nose! I think its the benzoyl peroxide. So I just ordered murad, it claims to not dry out your skin so bad. Anyone use it before?
I also want to add I wash my face regularly, every morning and night, I also drink at least 6 glasses of water a day, and I also eat healthy.

Yes, and their products are good. If the regular acne kit is too drying, you could try the one for sensitive skin and see if that works any better.
I was actually going to ask if you were taking birth control – not as a course of treatment – but as a possible culprit in causing your adult acne.
Since you were free and clear during the most susceptible teen years, it’s seems highly probable that this could be caused by a cosmetic or product you’re using, OR something you’ve added to your diet. (Contrary to what many dermatologists say, diet DOES make a difference…it just isn’t the chocolate or potato chips that they used to suspect…..)
About your products – skin care, foundations, powders, hair care, toothpaste….even vitamins can be the culprit. Although it seems highly stupid to me, many personal care items and makeups contain known acne-genic products.
The trick is – how do YOU know which chemicals are acne-genic, and which ingredients are “safe”?
Go to and look for their detective list. You can compare the ingredients in the products you’re using to their list and eliminate some probable culprits. (For instance, alot of hair care products are high in sodium chloride….which rates a 5 out of a possible 5 for causing acne.
Sageskincare used to have a safe cosmetics list, but had to do away with it because so many manufacturers were routinely changing ingredients in their products, and it was hard to maintain the integrity of the list. Check with your local dermatologist….if they have any licensed cosmeticians, they may recommend some makeup for you. (Jan Marini or Jane Iredale are good options…but you’ll either have to get them through a cosmetician or perhaps order on-line.) I have used Neutrogena oil-free healthy skin foundation, as well as Estee Laude Ideal Matte refinishing makeup with great success. The best foundation I’ve found for coverage and minimizing break-outs is Dermacia (www.dermaciatv.com), but it is VERY EXPENSIVE, and limited in color options…it usually requires at least two foundations to get the right color for your skin.
I would recommend using Oil of Olay cleansing wipes for sensitive skin prior to using your Murad. This will thoroughly remove all makeup from your face, and prepare your skin for the benefits of the Murad. If you have traces of makeup on your skin, then the cleansers and treatments aren’t going to be as effective.
Another excellent source for skin care and information is. Even if you don’t order their products, they offer alot of good articles and information that will help you.
Finally, let’s look at your diet more closely. If you drink energy drinks (like Dr. Enuf), eat shellfish (including shrimp), kelp or seaweed in oriental food, or take vitamins containing iodide (or iodine), then those are HUGE problems….I am especially suspicious of your diet since you mention the cystic acne. Another factor could be acidity. If you eat alot of pickles, drop em. If you drink alot of orange juice from concentrate – eat oranges instead. Food and drinks high in iodine or acidity will all effect how your skin functions…..and persistent and/or cystic acne is frequently the result.
My 18 year old nephew had beautiful skin all through high school. He moved out, starting drinking lots of energy drinks and eating out more, developed SEVERE cystic acne and couldn’t figure out why. We did some detective work to see what had changed, and it was mostly his diet.
He discontinued the drinks, changed his routine eating out, and the skin cleared up. I can’t make any 100% promises, but I’m willing to bet you are unknowingly contributing to or even causing the problem……either through your cosmetics, products, or diet.
Remember, even if Murad is good for you, it will only treat the symptoms….you want to identify and eliminate the CAUSE!
Best wishes -
